The struggle for Education remains a matter of life and death. The Day of the African Child which is observed every year on the 16th of June
honors the memory of students who were massacred in Soweto in 1976 for
protesting against Education Injustice and Inequality in Apartheid South
Africa. This is relevant today as the world is still shocked by the
kidnapping of more than 257 girls from a school in North-East Nigeria. This year the theme is Education: "A child friendly, quality, free and compulsory education for all children in Africa.
There will be a massive youth take-over at the African Union in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia on the day by global youth ambassadors. All over the
world, other ambassadors will be holding events to commemorate the day
and for those who are interested, ADEBUKOLA OLABISI ORENUGA, A world at School Global Youth ambassador will be holding an interractive session
that day with students between the ages of 12-18 years. She will be
educating them on the history of the Day of The African Child by showing
a short film and we will then be listening to the young people on The Challenges of an African Child in Pursuit of an Education and The Way Forward.
These reports will then be forwarded to the United Nations Secretary-General's Global Education First Initiative who are partners of A World At School.
