Instilling 21st Century Skills at Home

We are in the information age with a myriad of technology at our beck and call just for anything you can imagine! The education sector is having its own fair share too with several institutions around the world conducting research on 21 century teaching methodologies etc, to further intensify education reforms against traditional mode of education. As it stands, the child needs to consciously imbibe 21 century skills to survive at a time as ours and especially for the envisioned future. However, one often neglected and not revered environment where the child learns first-hand about survival skills for the 21 century is the home.

The home is the very foundation upon which the society’s architecture is built. Quite popular is the cliché Charity begins at home, but fast eroding from our culture is it too. Unfortunately, the survival skills for this age are embedded in the underlining principles of age-old traditional values that have not been conscientiously handed down from generation to generation or communicated in the form that is intuitively deciphered by the child. To put it more aptly, skills needed in the 21 century are really not new. The challenge is just that the rapidity of change within the technological, economic, political, socio-cultural landscapes caught us unprepared!

Scenario of Education in our schools

Students of today
Attending schools of yesterday
Taught by teachers from the past
Preparing them for the future??!!

The cream of the next generation of mathematicians, represented by 582 high school students from 109 countries, will converge in Cape Town in July for the 55th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) - the first to be held in Africa.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, briefing journalists in Cape Town on Tuesday, said South Africa hoped that hosting the prestigious event would generate enthusiasm around mathematics and help to inspire the country's future engineers, accountants, doctors, teachers and inventors."We do believe that it is important for learners to enjoy mathematics, and this Olympiad gives participants a unique opportunity to broaden their mathematics horizon and compete against the very best in the world," Motshekga said. The Lagos Eko Education Project marks success

The quality of education has improved significantly in hundreds of public junior and secondary schools with the support of the Lagos Eko Secondary Education Project. The project’s success has led to its extension to help sustain the strong results, and expand it to other schools.

“The Lagos Eko project has built a critical pathway for students from low-income backgrounds to gain access to good-quality secondary education, showing that where there is a will, there is a way,” said Olatunde Adekola, World Bank task team leader for the project. “This project displays innovative features, including school grants which allow school principals to address their specific learning needs, greater accountability through the involvement of main stakeholders in key school management decisions and public private partnership in vocational training.’’

The project was initiated in 2009 with a goal of improving the quality of education in 40% of the targeted schools. Since then, 7,998 principals and district administrators have been through leadership training, exceeding the target of 1,076. With 1,426 trainees for district-level staff exceeded the target of 693. A new method of teacher of training was also implemented, where more than 25,000 teachers were trained also exceeded original targets. The project has helped 90% of schools achieve its targets and continues to excel, according to project-administered standardized student tests.

Escaping the slums: Nigeria to build fleet of floating schools

The ambitious project is currently under construction in the water community of Makoko in Lagos. It is being put together by NLÉ, a collaborative agency whose mission is to provide architectural change for developing cities.

The floating construct is built with locally sourced wood and electrically powered with solar panels. With global sea levels rising and flooding becoming more common in this part of the world, architects are now looking at new ways to construct buildings, such as the Makoko Floating School. This ambitious project is currently under construction and the floating school is not a totally alien sight to residents as they have built their homes on the water and traded on it for years. With only one primary school in Makoko, the new floating construction is definitely a welcome addition for locals.

Are you a soft or hard target?

In all schools, staff and students need to be able to work and learn in a safe and secure environment. Tragic incidents like the 6th of July 2013 killing of 59 boarding students in Mamudo government secondary school, Yobe state, 25th February 2014 killing of about 50 students and a teacher at Federal government College Buni Yadi, Yobe State, and the 14th of April 2014 kidnap of 276 girls from government secondary school in Chibok highlight the need for schools to urgently review their security systems. It's easy for people to say, "It won't happen in our school"; yet, studies and surveys repeatedly show that the human factor (what employees do or don't do) is the biggest threat to security/information systems and assets.

Teaching would not be possible without time devoted to reflection and rejuvenation. In the same way that crops need to be rotated so that soil can be replenished, teachers need time away from the classroom to rediscover different parts of their identities and return to classrooms and students with renewed joy, creative ideas, and reaffirmed visions of themselves as educators.

It's 8:35. Your chalk is in hand and you're ready to start your day.  You have carefully constructed a learning experience of visual input, hands-on activities, reading and experimentation, to help your students learn.

When you look around your room, do you see bright eyes and positive, expectant expressions, or do you see squirming, sleeping, or distracted students. What happens to your classroom mid-morning? Mid- afternoon? Do you have students who are stressed, depressed and anxious? According to experts, the internal environment of the brain is an integral part of learning, just as important as the classroom environment. You may find in some cases your students are not able to learn due to poor nutrition or inadequate hydration.

RESTORE TEACHING OF HISTORY IN SCHOOLS

One of the greatest mistakes ever made by our education planners is the removal of history as a subject from the secondary education curriculum. Today, our children grow up without understanding the various components of their country and how those components evolved.

They are unable to appreciate the various cultures in their country because they have been denied formal access to information about their past. Even in those "uncivilised" days of oral tradition, our forefathers ensured that their children were taught family history because it was believed that a child had to know who he was be able to fit into the society.
